Ideally situated in a quieter southern corner of the majestic Snowdonia National Park, getting into the great outdoors is as easy as taking that first step from the front door onto the forty miles of peaceful Dyfi forest walks. If your map reading is rusty, Gareth and Kirsty have linked up with expert local mountain guides, and can provide a hearty packed lunch, so there is no excuse, tackling the mighty Cader Idris is immediately less daunting. A restorative complimentary cake of the day and a warming cuppa awaits on your weary, but glowing, return.

There are presently four cracking rooms to choose from, with more to come ( watch this space, exciting plans are afoot ), all with restful views of the Dulas valley, gardens, or stream.  We loved the Dulas Room, with its airily high ceilings, period features, squishy sofa and cool blue tones.  The large rainfall shower is a good prelude to perusing the pillow menu, no less, but if you fancy a soak, ask for Goddard with its sumptuous deep bath.  There is an up-scale, but down-played, feel here, no nonsense luxury with a sense of humour.

Breakfast is an occasion at Yr Hen Ficerdy.   Three to die-for courses of well-sourced Welsh ingredients with provenance, prepared with respect, and delivered with a dose of expert local knowledge and a smile. Look out for the daily specials too. In the evenings, kick back by the fire with a glass of something from the honesty bar, and graze on their new charcuterie platter highlighting artisan Welsh cheeses.  If you fancy making more gastronomic memories, Ynyshir, officially the UK’s number one restaurant and critics favourite is just a few miles away, but book early, reservations are hard to come by.

All of the bedrooms and public areas are available to book exclusively, and come complete with a private chef, making it sought after base for catch-up get togethers.

Great Little Rarebits

Great Little Places enjoys a reputation in Britain and worldwide as the collection of small and friendly places to stay in Wales. Small is beautiful – but such places, unlike the best hotels (which are listed in almost every guidebook), are much more difficult to find. Locating small establishments that really stand out from the huge choice is much more of a challenge – but that's what we're all about.
