Restaurant

Nestled amidst the well-heeled rural hills of Monmouthshire, just a short drive from Abergavenny, lies Restaurant 1861, a hidden gem that epitomises the charm and warmth of warm Welsh hospitality. Based in a beautifully restored 19th-century building, this truly family-run gem is an unpretentiously intimate and homely place, focussed on skilled cooking, the best local ingredients with unshakeable provenance and, genuinely personal service.

At the heart of Restaurant 1861 are hospitality stalwarts, Simon and Kate King. Simon, a chef with an impressive pedigree, honed his skills under the tutelage of the renowned Roux brothers at the three-Michelin-starred Waterside Inn in Bray and then at two-Michelin-starred Lettonie in Bristol. His passion for unashamedly classical French techniques is the backbone of the menus, which highlight the absolute best local ingredients, many of which are home-grown in their own gardens or supplied by Kate’s father from his well-known local nursery.

The culinary journey at 1861 is exceptional. Look out for slow-roasted shoulder of Welsh lamb delivered with deceptively easy finesse. Desserts like champagne rhubarb syllabub and iced yoghurt parfait with pink grapefruit sorbet keep us coming back.

The restaurant’s dedication to cossetting guests is demonstrable. Understanding the challenges parents face when dining out, 1861 does not offer a fixed children’s menu. Instead, they like nothing better than a chat with both parents and the kids to create bespoke dishes that are both appealing and nutritionally guilt free, a rare treat for the entire family.

With a wine list like this, a few steps to the purpose built six en-suite rooms is tempting. Spacious and light, some with terraces and overlooking the gardens, and all with luxurious contemporary bathrooms, it is easy to forget altogether that you have a car and lean into the huge gin collection.

Restaurant 1861 is more than just a place to dine; it’s a gastro-destination where culinary artistry meets informal Croeso, offering an unforgettable experience in the heart of Monmouthshire’s famous foodie triangle.

Great Little Rarebits

Great Little Places enjoys a reputation in Britain and worldwide as the collection of small and friendly places to stay in Wales. Small is beautiful – but such places, unlike the best hotels (which are listed in almost every guidebook), are much more difficult to find. Locating small establishments that really stand out from the huge choice is much more of a challenge – but that's what we're all about.
