Taldraeth

Perhaps it’s the mountains. Perhaps it’s the fact that Welsh is spoken widely in this part of Wales as a first language. Whatever the reason, it’s undeniable that Snowdonia has a strong ‘sense of place’.

Taldraeth is a converted rectory that remains true to its Victorian roots. The spacious bedrooms are traditionally and lavishly furnished with antiques, paintings of local scenes, Welsh textiles and blankets. Even the luxurious mattresses are made from Welsh organic wool. No detail has been overlooked, from the welcoming plate of welshcakes (homemade, of course) to the cotton towels and robes and deluxe toiletries (you’ve guessed it, they’re Welsh too). Full Welsh breakfasts from the Aga include all the local classics, including laverbread and cockles, with lots of vegetarian options (for example Glamorgan sausages and Welsh rarebit). Elaborate afternoon teas are a speciality, and Mirain also offers evening meal by prior arrangement.

Taldraeth’s location is perfect for exploring North Wales’s coast and country. Head one way and you’re soon in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. In the opposite direction there’s the Llŷn Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Magical Portmeirion is minutes away, and from Porthmadog you can ride narrow-gauge railways into the mountains. If you are looking for a truly Welsh getaway, this is the place for you.
